The same as in all silver coins minted in up to 1964 - an alloy of 90% silver and 10% copper.

Due to the rising price of silver, in 1965 the Mint changed the composition of the dime and quarter to a 3-layer "sandwich" consisting of outer layers of 25% nickel / 75% copper bonded to a pure copper core. Halves were changed to outer layers of 80% silver bonded to a core of 40% silver. Unfortunately the price of silver continued to rise and so many halves were melted that they effectively disappeared from circulation. In 1971 the Mint belatedly switch them to the same composition as dimes and quarters but it was too late to restore the denomination.

The new Sacagawea and Presidential Series dollars are made of a manganese-brass-copper sandwich, giving them a golden appearance.
