Philo Farnsworth didn't use any materials to create the first television because John Logie Baird built and demonstrated the world's first television in 1925, three years before Farnsworth had his own version running in 1928.
Farnsworth however did produce the first television that had no moving parts. He achieved this in 1929.

Contrary to the suggestion made by the Hollywood film he wasn't the inventor of the very first television but Philo Farnsworth was the first person to demonstrate a fully electronic television. John Logie Baird is credited with the first television in 1925. Farnsworth's fully electronic version was shown to the world in 1929.
The first television was in September of 1927. This television was designed by Philo Taylor Farnsworth who was an inventor.
The greatest obstacle Philo Farnsworth had to overcome was his age. He wasn't even in high school when he first had the idea for how to make televisions work. School work, studying, and work delayed his progress.
