In its simplest form all you needs is clay and your hands to model it with. Larger sculptures may need the support of an internal wire framework or skeleton. Various tools can be used to shape and incise the clay. A kiln may also be required if the clay sculpture is to be fired or baked.
Keep in mind there many types of clay you can use, this site suggests just one:

** http://www.ehow.com/how_2214536_build-clay-sculptures.htmlThere are three basic types of clay: Earthenware, Stoneware and Porcelain. Earthenware is porous and tends to be more groggy, it can be white or red. It will not hold water no mater how high it gets fired. Stoneware comes in several colors and styles, textures and it will hold water all by itself when fired to the recommended temperature. Porcelain is the closest to glass and will vitrify (hold water) and display some transparency when held to a bright light.
here there are some videos which demostrate how do make things out of clay. check it out: http://www.sutree.com/videos/Pottery/317 Esti

mostly sculpture. this could be stone, ceramic (clay), or metal work.
This depends on he melting temperature of the wire that you are using. It also depends on the firing temperature of the clay. If the melting temperature of the wire is higher than the firing temperature of the clay, then wire can be added to a clay piece.

It is safe, the only issue I have is that the metal is going to expand and the clay will shrink. This may cause cracks in the clay.
