If your soup cup has a handle, then you won't need an insulator, the cup itself would be designed to provide adequate insulation. If your cup does not have a handle, you could in principle use any kind of cloth, paper, or cardboard; a paper towel would work, an oven mitt, a scarf, a glove. Wearing a glove works perfectly well.

Air is the best heat insulator, provided you can prevent it from transferring heat by convection. This is normally made into use in double-glazed windows.
Ones that are good insulators of heat or can trap pockets of air to insulate as air is a terrible conductor of heat. E.g. Polystyrene

The best cable protectors use a combination of different layers and materials to insulate the underlying cable. If you have ever opened up an economy cable you will see that it only has the plastic coating for protection. A better quality cable will have a metal, and fabric sleeve as well.

On a hot day water would be the best, but if you want something tasty and refreshing, drink Nestea. It works wonders
