That term is used to describe a satellite in an orbit that it completes in exactly the

same time as the Earth takes to rotate once. Such a satellite appears to return to

the same longitude at the same time every day.

If the orbit is circular, then the satellite always stays over the same longitude, although

it may oscillate north and south during a day.

If the orbit is circular and over the equator, then the satellite appears to hang

motionless at the same point in the sky, and it's described as "geostationary".
