What does it mean if an animal is in danger of being extinct?

A common word used to describe animals that are almost extinct is 'endangered.' There is 'scale' of how endangered an animal is, which was created by the ICUN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). The scale is as follows:

Extinct - species that are no longer found anywhere in the world

Extinct in the wild - species that can still be found in conservation projects or zoos but are no longer found living in the wild.

Critically endangered - species facing a very high risk of becoming extinct in the wild.

Endangered - as above but less severely

Vulnerable - species that are likely to become endangered unless their current situation in the wild changes (e.g. they stop being hunted)

Conservation dependent - species that are dependent on conservation efforts to stop them from becoming endangered

Near threatened - species that are considered threatened with being endangered in the near future

Least concern - species that as yet do not fit into any of the other categories (but they must have had their population status assessed to fit into this category).
