Up until the early 1800's tomatoes were thought to be poisonous. A spicy tomato mixture became a health fad in the 30's. It was advertised as being a cure-all for everything. Today we know that tomatoes do contain antioxidants which are beneficial in preventing various cancers, Heart disease and diseases of ageing. The high levels of vitamin C may also boost the immune system and help fight off ailments such as colds.
Ketchup
I like this question it looks like you are as interested to learn about history as I am. As far as I know the term Ketchup means a sauce, a vinegary one. Two of the oldest ketchups in history is Mushroom ketchup and walnut ketchup. The British always called it " Tomato Ketchup" due to the base is tomatoes.

Spain's equivalent of Heinz ketchup is often referred to as "ketchup" as well, but a popular local brand is "Tomate Frito," which is a cooked tomato sauce commonly used as a condiment. Additionally, many Spaniards enjoy "salsa de tomate," a tomato-based sauce that can be used similarly to ketchup. While Heinz ketchup is available, these local alternatives are frequently preferred.
For a while tomato extract was thought to have many healing principles (which isn't too far off since tomatoes are so darn good for you!). After looking around for a little while I could only find rumors and not so creditable looking sources linking ketchup to being used for medicinal reasons in war. I do know that ketchup has been a part of the provisions for many military divisions because of its high antioxidant count and ability to cover up really foul tasting foods.
"ketchup" is masculine in French, "le ketchup". Examples: "Tu as du ketchup sur la joue." = "You have ketchup on the cheek." "Passe-moi le ketchup." = "Pass me the ketchup." "la bouteille de ketchup" = "the ketchup bottle"
"Catsup" is used primarily in the southern states in the USA, with "ketchup" being used almost exclusively in the rest of the country and through the world.
