Meditation is such a broad church of activity that it would be hard to suggest a catch all objective. It is probably also really important to separate meditation for health and meditation that leads towards a spiritual goal. Meditation for health can be further broken down to physical and mental health.

Generally speaking most meditation used to promote improved mental health in the West uses different forms of; calm abiding, mindfulness or transcendental techniques. My experience is based on the mindfulness methods where the idea is to 'let go' of all thought processes for a short while. Over time this may promote a sense of calm, increase the activity of the left hemisphere of the brain and lead to the feeling that one is a little more in control of what is happening.

In every case always seek guidance from a reliable/experienced teacher.
