What men in the Bible were sent to the Isle of Patmos?

The only mention of Patmos in the whole Bible is when the author of the Book of Revelation, who identified himself as 'John', said that he was writing from Patmos. Because of the coincidence of name, the second-century Church Fathers decided that the author was the apostle John. However, modern scholars do not believe that the author was either the apostle John or the author of John's Gospel. For this reason, he is often now referred to as John of Patmos.

After the Church Fathers attributed Revelation to the apostle John, a further Christian tradition developed that John was exiled to Patmos because the Romans had been unable to harm him. However this is not supported by The Bible and is unlikely to be true.
