ASE standards have grades, which indicates the amount of carbon added to the iron when making steel. Fastener grades are 3, 5 and 8, the latter being the "hardest" or "tool steel" which is called when a particularly difficult fastening is required in design, e.g., connecting rod bolts. Grade 3 are often referred to as "butter bolts" because they break real easy if "over torqued".
