The width of human hands vary considerably from person to person, female to male. Also, the width will increase if the hand is pressed down flat on a hard surface and then measured. The best thing to do is to measure your hand and use that measurement.
A centimetre for a rough measure, a millimetre for more precision.

The size of a human hand , varies from person to person no matter what nationality you are.. However smaller , shorter people tend to have smaller hands than tall people. Heavy weight people also often have larger hands but not necessarily.
Any square unit you like can be used to measure the area of a postcard, however to make the numbers have a reasonable size and ease of handling, I would suggest using square centimetres as a postcard is about hand size (and likely to be about 15cm by 10cm).

You could use cm, meters (eg. 0.18cm ) or millimetres . A mix of cm and mm should be best for accuracy .

Ok so if you have a tape measure open it and I will show you how it is used exactly. So as you can see at the top which are the big lines of the tape measure they are called (inches). This is used for measuring the formula of a arm size, hand size, hip size and the waist size. But now I will talk about measuring as assessing width as my measuring unit. So basically the top constituent part of the tape measure are the inches and the bottom are the cm's. So to find the width would mean that every 10 cm is the width but when go on to a quarter of width it will basically mean that the answer would be 1w and a quarter.
