Timing chain has stretched due to age and mileage of vehicle
Timing Chain may have strechted and may need replacing before you do that though you should probably take off the cover and chack the condition of the chain.
It might not be the timing chain, check if the exhaust muffler has not come adrift.
the 1997 grand am has a timing CHAIN. it takes approx. 4-6 hours to replace. that is if you have done timing chains before. otherwise...it might take longer
Timing Belt. Mine just went out. You might have to replace the tensioners too. :(
If your vehicle is at least 60,000 miles it is recommended you replace the timing chain. If your timing chain broke, your engine would NOT run because the timing chain is what rotates your engines camshafts to open and close the valves. Also, you would have some serious engine damage if you were driving and your engine suddenly just quit and it happened to be your timing chain. There really is no way to "check" a timing chain as it's hidden behind the belt area of the engine (if I'm not mistaken). If you're going to go through the labor of "checking" a timing chain, you might as well replace it, as the average timing chain job costs about $220, $200 of that being the labor.
It does not have a timing belt. It has a chain. the timing chain is on the left side(passenger side) of the engine, you might want to thing about changing the water pump at the same time being that to get to one you have to move the other.
redo the timing or replace the whole kit - I might add that replacing the entire timing chain as a kit is what you would do when you find out that the timing chain is bad. The question was what happens when the timing chain is going out? 1. It may get or be harder to start the engine 2. The engine performance will be down 3. The ignition and cam timing will be unstable 4. The engine has a greater potential to "jump" timing or become mistimed. This could lead to bent valves and other problems which are more expensive to fix.
Parts and labor to replace the timing chain on a Nissan Maxima will easily exceed over $1,500.00. If you have to incur the expense, might as well also spend another $500.00 to replace the water pump. [Note: when that timing chain goes, you lose the engine. Engine-replacement is over $3,000.] The timing chain shouldn't really break. "Going-bad" will be where the timing chain is getting loose and the sound of the chain flapping around inside its assembly can actually be heard as you rev the engine. Have a reliable mechanic give you their assessment of what's happening with the timing chain (and the water pump). Might as well get a second mechanic give a second opinion.
Hi I just singed up looking for some answers & came upon this one , Well I'm doing a timing chain on a 1999 Altima (same engine!!!!!) it came to me with the same noise, When I inspected found the lower guide was GONE,witch led to bigger problems W/the main & rod bearings from all the chewed up guide.. So I would say it timing chain related(guides & ??)If that is your problem be warned that the chain might be the least of your conserns. As for cost, It a flag time of appx. 12 hours X labor rate plus I payed $252. for the kit
Incorrect installation of the chain. It is backfiring because the timing is off. Remove the chain and do it again correctly.
A 2000 Skoda Felicia 1.3 mpi has a timing chain. Not a timing belt. A timing chain. So buying a used felicia and not replacing it is not actually risky, as with a car with a timing belt. The chain of course will also develope 'slack', so it is a good idea to change it after so many klms, and/or if it as gotten too noisy. The possibility of the chain breaking is very very very slim. It WILL develope some slack though, and might jump a tooth, worsening performance and fuel economy. Parts are cheap for the felicia.
your chain tensioner probley has broken apart and u might need a new one.
