Before the Pearl Harbor attack there were some 120,000 American soldiers. At the end of the war the USA had about 16 million under arms (most of them reservists); about 4 million Americans were in military action in Europe (against Germany and Italy) and half a million men were in action in the Pacific (against the Japanese).
Soldiers still serving in the military did not do anything overt to end the war, however, many soldiers began protesting the war as soon as they were released at the end of their military duty. After massive bombing raids had already devastated the Japanese home islands, the final impetus was the dropping of two atomic bombs on Japan, virtually destroying the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan agreed to surrender just six days after the second bombing.
