Carrier warfare was entirely new. Tactics were flying machines verses other flying machines and flying machines attacking warships. Warships did NOT fight each other; and yet this was a naval battle.
This was a new type of naval battle; fought strictly by flying machines. Airmen had to battle with aerial combat and warship anti-aircraft batteries. Dive and torpedo bombers had to fight their way thru enemy fighter planes and then thru warship's air defenses. Warship crewmen had to fire AAA at attacking torpedo and dive bombers, and strafing fighters. Warships defending against airplanes and airplanes attacking warships. Airplanes attacking airplanes! This was the Coral Sea.
