There should be an ingredients list on the bag of litter as not all litter is the same. It depends on the type of litter (clay or wood pellets) and also the brand.

The cheapest and most common type of kitty litter is Clay. However, there are a variety of other absorbents that have been used including recycled newspapers, popcorn, and silica Gel.

It depends on the type of kitty litter, there are a bunch of different kinds on the market. The most popular it the clay type of litter, which isn't you standard clay (can't remember the name of the clay sorry). There is also a pine kitty litter which as you can guess is made from pine saw dust, (the pine litter helps keep the smell down). Lastly there is a paper litter made from recycled newspapers. Your cat may like one more then the other, if you currently use the clay type and want to switch it best to slowly introduce them to the new litter. For example if you want to use the pine litter, you will want to fill the litter box 3/4 full of the clay and 1/4 of the pine. Over the next few weeks put more pine litter then clay. By week four you should be just using the pine litter.

Cats use kitty litter but humans do not. Humans could, but I highly recommend you don't. The sand they use to make the litter is not for humans to be smelling.
