Very little info to work with! It could be a model 39, but no way to be sure with so little information. If there is a tang sight mounted behind the hammer, remove the two screws, and the model designation should be on the top tang, under the sight for a model 39. If it's not there, then there's a lot more info on the barrel than just the Oct 38 info you gave. marlinguy@juno.com
This Marlin 39A Mountie .22 Caliber Lever-action rifle with serial number R5077 was manufactured between 1957-1958.
53 years old.
I have Marlin Model 336RC lever action I inherieted recently... Serial number I found was under the lever.
Depending on condition, a Marlin 1895 lever action in 45-70 sells for $400-$500.
Roughly 1900. Since Marlin mixed serial numbers between models on the early levers it can be hard to pin down exactly. As to caliber, look on the top flat of the barrel. sales@countrygunsmith.net

== == Being this is the first model lever action Marlin ever made and serial 1 would be a rather prized piece for a collector. However even with it being serial 1 condition is still a significant factor in determining it's value and no information about that is given.http://wiki.answers.com/wiki.phtml?title=I_have_an_1891_marlin_tackdown_22_SN-56656_VGC_shoots_VG_what_can_you_tell_me_about_the_history_value_ect_TNX_joe&action=edit§ion=new
