The view of evolution occurring relatively constantly over a long time frame is called gradualism. This stands in contrast to the view of long periods of stasis punctuated by relatively rapid change, usually caused by environmental change. This is called punctuated equilibrium.

In contrast, the punctuated equilibrium model depicts evolution as long periods of no evolutionary change followed by rapid periods of change. Both are models for describing successive evolutionary changes due to the mechanisms of evolution in a time frame. How these changes occur incrementally differs between the two models.

The "punc eq" model is supported by the fact that the environment (which leads to the changes) will often suddenly change and force organisms to adapt in new ways. Both models are "correct," but one model may be more accurate depending on the environment.

Gradualism is the name of this model of slow evolution. As opposed to punctuated equilibrium, the fast/stasis model for evolutionary change. These are not always mutually exclusive models. .
