The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints added the subtitle "Another Testament of Jesus Christ" to the Book of Mormon in 1982 in order to clarify and emphasize the purpose of the Book of Mormon. All copies of the Book of Mormon published by this church today carry this subtitle. Other denominations in the Mormonism movement that publish their own editions of the Book of Mormon, as well as private and commercial printings, generally do not include the subtitle.

The American founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, Joseph Smith, was born in December 1805. At the age of 24, in 1930, he published the original Book of Mormon.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) believes that the Book of Mormon was written on golden colored (although not necessarily the metal gold) plates, delivered to the prophet Joseph Smith by the Angel Moroni. Joseph Smith then translated the plates by the power of God and published the writings as The Book of Mormon. Mormons use the Book of Mormon side-by-side with the Bible. Other religious groups which have broken off from the Mormon Church, such as the Community of Christ and the Apostolic United Brethren also use the Book of Mormon as scripture. Mormon is a nickname for Latter Day Saints. This is because of their belief in the Book of Mormon. Mormon is the name of the man who compiled and abridged the Book of Mormon. He lived in about the 4th century. He gathered the historical and religious texts of his people, and combined them onto one set of metal plates. These plates were translated by Joseph Smith in the late 1820's to become the Book of Mormon. See the related links below to learn more about him or to read the Book of Mormon online.
Do you mean the Book of Mormon? Most of the Book of Mormon was written between the reign of Zedekiah of Judah (about 600 BC) and about 430 AD. One portion was written at a time earlier than this and describes events that happened shortly after the fall of the Tower of Babel. The Book of Mormon was buried by its last writer, Moroni, somewhere near 430 AD. Moroni then appeared to Joseph Smith in the mid 1820's and lead him to the place where the record was buried. Joseph Smith translated it into English and the Book of Mormon was first published in 1830. The Book of Mormon is used as scripture along with the Holy Bible by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly nicknamed the "Mormon" church). The Book of Mormon was written between 600 B.C. and 400 A.D. It begins with a prophet named Lehi, a contemporary of Jeremiah, in Jerusalem. He and his family travel to the Americas to avoid the prophesied Babylonian Captivity. The Book of Mormon is a record of their decendants until the time that only one righteous man, Moroni, remains. He buries the record in 400 A.D. Those who believe the Book of Mormon is true and not a fabrication believe that Joseph Smith was lead to the place where the record was buried by Moroni himself, who had returned as an angel. Joseph Smith then translated the record into the Book of Mormon by the power of God. The majority of the translation took place in the late spring of 1929, with the first edition of the Book coming off the presses in early 1830.
