In the first presidential election, members of Congress voted. They each had two votes. The person with the most votes became President and the runner up became Vice-President. All 69 members of Congress voted for George Washington, making him the very first US President. All the other votes were divided between eleven candidates, and John Adams won the majority of those votes, making him the first Vice-President.
