George Washington's desire to free his slaves after his wife's death is believed to stem from a combination of personal and moral reasons. He expressed in his will that he wished to grant them their freedom as he recognized the contradiction between fighting for liberty and the ownership of human beings. Additionally, it is believed that Washington's exposure to Enlightenment ideals and the influence of fellow Founding Fathers played a role in shaping his views on the immorality of slavery.

Both Barack Obama and George Washington were firsts-- Washington was the first president of the United States, while Barack Obama was the first black president. Also, both men were happily married and devoted to their wives (George to his wife Martha, and Barack to his wife Michelle). But given that George Washington owned slaves, and lived at a time when black people were generally not regarded as human beings worthy of equal rights, one wonders what President Washington would have thought about a world where black people are not only free men and women, but they can run for any political office in the country (and in the case of Barack Obama, even win the presidency). By all accounts, President Washington was tolerant of other religions and belief systems, so one would like to think he would be pleased that America had made so much progress.
