This phenomenon is known as the rain shadow effect. As moist air is forced to rise over a mountain range, it cools and releases precipitation on the windward side. By the time the air descends on the leeward side, it is drier and has lost much of its moisture, resulting in a drier climate on that side of the mountain range.
The Great Dividing Range influences the climate of eastern Australia by blocking moisture-laden winds from the east and causing rainfall on the eastern side of the range. It also affects the distribution of plant and animal species by creating different habitats on either side of the range, contributing to the high biodiversity of the region. Additionally, the range has played a role in shaping the development of settlements and transportation routes in the region.
Typically, the mountain range with more rugged terrain, higher elevation, more erosion, and fewer vegetation cover is older. Older mountain ranges tend to have more signs of weathering and erosion compared to younger ones. Geological dating techniques can also be used to determine the age of a mountain range.
