S.E. Hinton chose to write about gangs in "The Outsiders" to explore themes of belonging, friendship, and the struggles faced by teenagers growing up in a tough environment. By portraying the dynamics of rival gangs and the individuals within them, she could delve into the complexities of identity and loyalty in adolescence.
Sharon Draper was inspired to write about gang violence after witnessing the impact of gangs on her students in urban schools. She wanted to write stories that shed light on this important issue and the struggles faced by young people caught up in gang culture. Her goal was to bring awareness to the realities of gang violence and provide a voice for those affected.
so she could deal with her dads condition, because of the 2 rival gangs in her high school, and because the was angry at the 2 gangs because fought over her friend.
