The movies to be released on Home Video (DVD and Blu-ray) is decided upon by the studio's home video departments. New releases are scheduled after their theatrical releases for a week that the department's marketing people determine will earn the biggest profit, i.e. usually in a week when another similar film will not be released. For older films, called catalog titles, the home video department projects the number of units the movie will sell and compare it to the cost of mastering and producing the discs. If it projects a good profit can be made, then they will determine the best time of year to release it.
