On May 31, 1893 a dairy farmer's daughter was murdered in her own kitchen with an ax or hatchett. Twenty-two year old Bertha Manchester had 23 separate ax wounds on her head and neck, very similar to the Borden's double murder which occured on August 4, 1892.
This was 'heaven sent' for the defense, with Lizzy in jail awaiting trial it would have been impossible for her to be the murderer. Thinking all 3 murders were done by the same person, this could have influenced the jury pool, which were not sequestered.
During the Borden trial, the murderer of Manchester was found to be a hired hand that Bertha's father had recently fired. And to make matters worse, Manchester had slapped the man, Jose Correira, a Portuguese immigrant, felt a slap was too offensive to ignore. Originally planning to murder Mr. Manchester, when he wasn't home, Correira decided to kill his daughter instead.

When that failed she had to find an alternate plan. The fact that the Borden's were poisoned spoke volumes. Poisoning is commonly used by women as a means of murder. This coupled with other evidence makes a strong case for Lizzie's guilt. It is also true that when women murder it is usually someone they know well, as opposed to men that murder strangers or causual aquaintences.

Oddly enough, Lizzie was charged with three counts of first degree murder. One count each for Andrew and Abbey Borden's death and an additional count for Andrew and Abbey together. I'm not exactly sure why the prosecutor filed the additional charge or what the laws in MA were at the time of the murders, which was 1892.
