Both aid in the expansion and relaxation of lungs.
The thoracic diaphragm, where its contraction assists inhalation and relaxation assists exhalation plays a main role in altering the lung's volume and air pressure inside, contributing to the process of respiration. Many other muscles are involved in both raising and lowering the ribcage, and any stomach muscles involved assist in exhalation.
because it divides the chest from the abdomen
Theres alot of things that come into play but i wont get into detail. Simply the diaphragm contracts and relaxes along with other muscles. So when the diaphragm contracts and moves down its pretty much sucking air into the lungs. When you exhale it relaxes back to normal pushing air out! Just picture it almost delusional lol.
Abdominothoracic respiration is the type of respiration dominant in males. In this type of respiration the muscles of stomach and diaphragm play a greater part than the thoracic muscles. The dominant respiration in females is thoracoabdominal respiration in which thoracic muscles are dominant. It is speculated the thoracoabdominal respiration(IN WHICH ABDOMINAL MUSCLES ARE USED LESS THAN THORACIC MUSCLES)help women in maintaing the respiratory movements in pregnancy when a great volume of abdomen is used up by the fetus.
