Only a small fraction of Scarlatti's compositions were published during his lifetime; Scarlatti himself seems to have overseen the publication in 1738 of the most famous collection, his 30 Essercizi ("Exercises"). These were rapturously received throughout Europe, and were championed by the foremost English writer on music of the eighteenth century, Dr. Charles Burney.
Scarlatti lived mostly during the Baroque period (1600-1750). But his sonatas are in the Rococo (Galant, or early Classical) style, and influenced mostly the composers of the Classical period (1750-1820). The instrument he used in that time was the Harpsichord, not the piano. His sonatas are more straight-forward than German composer's pieces, such as Felix Mendelssohn,Robert Schumann, Johhan Subestian Bach, George Frederic Hadel or Lugwig van Beethoven.
Domenico Scarlatti's main contributions to the classical repertoire are some 555 single-movement sonatas, mostly written for the harpsichord; today they are usually heard played on the piano.
