Originally saxes were intended primarily for military bands, or in the case of the bass saxes, as a replacement for the bass wind instruments of the day which were pretty limited. (can you say ophicleide?) Adolph Sax had also hoped for more acceptance by orchestras but their instrumentation was pretty well set and didn't have the weak spots like the band instrumentation.
