First line indent marker
The purpose of using a first line indent in a document is to visually separate paragraphs and improve readability by creating a clear visual cue that indicates the beginning of a new paragraph.
Both of these terms come from the accounting document known as the income statement, or Profit/Loss account. Top line is the first line of that document, and bottom line is the last line in that document. When companies talk about the need to increase their top line, they are talking about the need to focus on generating/increasing sales. Bottom line efforts are usually aimed toward cost reduction to increase the margin and therefore increase the results.
To indent the first line of a paragraph in a document, you can use the tab key on your keyboard or adjust the paragraph settings in your word processing software. Here is an example: Before: This is a paragraph without indentation. After: This is a paragraph with indentation.
