Muhammad Ali was originally named Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. His name change to Muhammad Ali came after he converted to Islam in 1964, influenced by his mentor Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam. The name "Muhammad" was chosen in honor of the Prophet Muhammad, while "Ali" was given to him by Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam.
Nation of Islam was its name
Muhammed Ali
The surname "Little" was bestowed upon his ancestors by people who had kidnapped them from Africa and enslaved them, therefore it was not a legitimate name. The name X indicated that he was in some way unknown (like an algebraic variable) to the European-dominated culture of the US.
He chose a Muslim name after converting to Islam.
The Nation of Islam is a African-American Islamic Organization. In the past, the Nation of Islam has advocated for violence against Whites, Jews, and Asians claiming that all of these people have repressed the "Black Interest" and should be "properly punished" for their conduct. Understandably, mainstream Sunni and Shiite Islam both condemned the Nation of Islam for these racial beliefs saying that Islam does not recognize any difference between people on the basis of race and that discrimination on such a basis is un-Islamic. With the death of the early Nation of Islam leaders, the Nation of Islam began an effort to reconcile its beliefs with Sunni Islam and is increasingly moving along that path, but there are still elements of the Nation of Islam that advocate for violence against non-Blacks. _______________________________________________________________ Nation of Islam (NOI) is not belonging to main stream Islam. Followers of NOI are expelled from the Islam religion. Refer to question below.

Malcom X
Malcolm Little was his birth name but then he changed it to X when he was older cause it was a slave name.
He adopted his name when he joined the Nation of Islam (which was sort of a different sect of Islam at the time. They had accepted their leader, Elijah Muhammad, as the Messiah/Mahdi, and had some racist ideas as well.), but he converted to Islam in 1975 when Elijah died and his son, Warith Deen Muhammad, took control of the Nation of Islam and reformed it to more mainstream Islam (including rejection of Elijah as God on Earth, rejection of racism, closer ties to the Muslim community, and the Five Pillars of Islam). Muhammad Ali attributes his conversion to this shift toward Islam by the Nation. Perhaps he realized that Islam was much better than the ideas of Elijah. Hope that helps.
Converted to Faradian (as in W.D. Fard, Elijah Muhammad, The Nation of Islam, and The Nation of Gods and Earths) Islam at age 16, taking the Godly name of Rakim Allah. His lyrics often contain references to his Five-Percenter faith. Any coincidence between the Nation of Gods and Earths and traditional Islam is accidental, as this form of Islam, an acronym for "I-Self Lord and Master," is a made-up religion that only has Islamic elements in it.
