US Navy Sea planes fought Japanese Imperial Land based planes during this battle over Saipan and the surrounding islands, and the Japanese lost most of their remaining experienced pilots as the US inflicted heavy casualities without many losses of their own pilots and planes.
It became clear that an invasion of Japan would be extremely costly.
