Russian (Soviet). The Russian sent a woman into space in the 1960's. The USA was planning to send a woman into space in the 1960's, but, did not do so, because President LBJ ordered NASA not to. The USA would not send a woman into space until the 1980's.

The name of the first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova, a Russian woman, in the 1960s. NASA wanted to send an American woman into space in the 1960s (just like the Russians did), but President LBJ said no, so the first American woman (Sally Ride) went into space in the 1980s.
