The feathers, or plumage, of a bird meet the following needs of a bird:

  • In many bird species, the male's brighter colouring or markings help attract a female. This ensure the species continues.
  • Waterproofing - most birds have feathers that help to waterproof them against rain or the water of the habitat in which they live. This provides protection for the bird.
  • Camouflage - many birds have plumage that enables them to blend in with their surroundings. This is useful for bids trying to hide from predators, and also for predators trying to ambush their prey.
  • Insulation - some species of birds, which live in colder climates, have feathers which are arranged and structured so as to insulate them better against the cold. This protects these birds.
