Why does a speaker need an electromagnet not a permanent magnet?

One of the main kinds of speakers needs both. Sound in the form of varying electricity is fed through part of the speaker known as the 'voice coil' which is actually just an electromagnet. Since the electricity in it is varying the magnetism produced by this coil varies too. The voice coil is placed close to a permanent magnet and the voice coil is permitted to move back and forth in response to the electricity going through it. A big cone is fastened to the voice coil to transmit the movements of the voice coil to the air more efficiently. Thus overall the permanent magnet and the electromagnet work together to produce the sound waves that we hear from a speaker. For a more detailed explanation go to the How Stuff Works web site and search for speaker.

Do a Vacuum cleaner needs a magnet?

If the vacuum cleaner is powered by electricity this is used to turn the electric motor which is needed to create the suction or vacuum. That motor either has permanent magnets inside it, or the current passes through many "turns" of wire to create magnets when you switch the cleaner on. Early experiment in electricity showed that if a wire is moved in a magnetic field some current is created. Similarly, if a magnet is moved near to a wire the same result occurs. So, yes the cleaner does need a magnet.

What is a electromagnet and what does it need to properly function?

A powerful magnet that only creates a magnetic field when a massive amount of power cycles through the magnet. To properly function, the magnet needs to be connected to a powerful source of electricity.

Why do Pakistan need dams?

Well ! Pakistan has been facing energy crises for the past 4 years. The electricity produced there does't fulfil the needs. So, they need to build more dams to create more electricity to meet the needs of the population.

How is hydro power produced?

Hydroelectric power is produced when water is dammed or concentrated to one point: turbines. The turbines spin as the rushing water speeds down the pipes or dam. As the turbines spin, they also turn a generator which needs movement to provide energy. The electricity produced by a generator is then transfered to power lines which carry electricity for hundreds of miles.

What is the similarities between a bar magnet and a electromagnets?

Both are magnets, but an electromagnet needs electricity to become a magnet. Hence, a magnet is also the same as a electromagnet. Also a magnet Will attract ferrous metals as will an electromagnet, when switched on!

In building an electrical generator does the the magnet have to touch the spinning copper or does it not matter?

no, magnet needs to be close to winding, not touching it

How does Paris France meet its energy needs?

the origin of electricity is now printed on utility bills. In 2007, the electricity in France was produced in nuclear plants for 84.2%, the second-largest source being dams (5.7%). Follow link for detailed chart.

Which was invented first the light bulb or electricity?

electricity because a light bulb needs electricity

What percentage of electricity in the US is produced by solar power?

Virtually none is currently produced through this means. The current technology is such that this is probably the correct amount. Hope is that the technology may someday become good enough to be useful for real power needs.
