Republicans were largely in favor of big business. But without adequate checks and balances (and the various safety nets which are somewhat in place, currently), this led to the stock market crash of 1929, and was followed by the populism of the next Democratic president, Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The Democratic-Republicans opposed the Federalist Party, which they saw as too centralized and favoring special interests over the rights of states and individuals. They also opposed some policies of President George Washington, particularly his administrations' pro-British stance.
Jefferson, Madison, and their followers were eventually known as Republicans to emphasize their commitment to republicanism, which prioritized the principles of popular sovereignty, individual rights, and limited government. This name choice was strategic, as it resonated with the ideals of the American Revolution and appealed to citizens' aspirations for self-governance. By adopting the term "Republican," they distinguished themselves from the Federalists, who were seen as favoring a stronger central government, thus reinforcing their identity as champions of democracy and civil liberties.
