Columbus did not discover North America, but did go to the islands in the Bahamas. He never knew that North America existed. Nothing much happened in 1492 after he returned to Spain. Few people realized he had sailed to a new area of the world and the Crown was not happy with him since he didn't find gold or riches for them.
Columbus had no charts of North America, he had charts of India and China as that was where he expected to be. He just thought all he needed to do was sail west. There would be nothing in the way. However when he arrived none of the charts matched, so he guessed he was in unknown islands near India because the natives had brownish/red complexion not yellow complexion.
