He was a Democratic-Republican, one of the founders in 1792. The party later split (in 1824) to form the Democratic Party and the Whig Party.
The political parties that were in the election of 1800 was the more democratic and states' rights side which was Thomas Jefferson and the strong central government side which was John Adams. Thomas Jefferson won the election of being President. Adams' party was known as the Federalists and Jefferson's as the Republicans.
Prior to 1824 most state offices were chosen by voters. They in turn selected a governor and Congressmen. By 1824 people were refusing to be managed under this scenario, and political parties were formed.

William Crawford was a member of the Democratic-Republican Party. He served as the United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1816 to 1825 and was the Democratic-Republican Party's candidate for President in the 1824 election, which he ultimately lost.
