Whales have a very complex variety of sounds ranging from clicking, to whistling, to very low groaning sounds. These sounds travel great distances underwater, and we as humans are beginning to understand more and more about what these sounds mean.

They are big mammals that sound like really big echoes in the water as if some one where moaning the letter "M".

A very lyrical description - moaning the letter M!

It depends on the species but some have a range of quite complex calls.

However, the "echo" is NOT from the animal. It's actually reverberation, not an echo, that creates the plangency; and is from the sea water and its surface. The whale's call itself is mostly whistles, chirps and grunts.

The three main types of calls that whales make are whistles, clicks, and pulse calls. Pulse calls are the most frequently used calls and sound like squeaks, screams, and squawks.
