I can't tell without seeing the picture but the two ventricles are at the bottom of the heart.

In a transverse section, the heart is actually between the sternum and the vertebrae below it. The apex of the heart is lowest tip of the organ that points downward from the base, forming what almost looks like a rounded point.

The apex is formed mostly by the left ventricle and extends pretty far out to the left in most people.

The large blood vessels come off the base while the tip (or apex) more or less points to the left.

I know, the apex (meaning summit) should be at the top of the heart, but some things are just the way they are. Like the right side of the patient seemingly on the left side.
