As far as the actual nutrients that give you energy, I'm not exactly sure, but here are some foods that will give you energy(I'm speaking from both being informed and experience):
Bananas, Watermelon, Carrots, Potatoes, and Shredded Wheat Cereal.
It is good to get a good balance of all of these for optimal energy. If you take caffeine once in a while, that will not hurt you. However, it dangerous, stupid, and counterproductive to take if often or on a regular or daily basis. You get addicted, and it stops giving you energy, it simply replaces your body's natural energy(generally speaking), so it doesn't give anymore; if you stop, your dead tired. So then, in order to get extra energy, you have to take like 3-4 cups at a time, and this is a dangerous level of caffeine, makes you more addictive, and, simply put, is terrible for your health. So basically, if once in a while, you are tired, and have a cup of coffe, that will not hurt you. However, if you drink it every morning before work, then it is bad. If you need the energy, try the foods listed above in bold, they really dowork!
