No- standing up and hammering on the pedals while the chain is "cross chained" can break a chain everytime. Learning how to properly shift will reduce most chain breakage issues.
First you need to figure out what width you need, for single-speed and internally geared bikes it's either 1/8" or 3/32". For externally geared bikes, just get a chain for the same number of speeds that you have sprockets at the back.When you buy the chain, do yourself a favor and pick up a chain breaker tool while you're at it.Chains are sold overly long, and there's no guarantee that it was properly sized to begin with.
