Australia is bordered in the west by the Indian Ocean; in the east by the Pacific Ocean; and in the south by the Southern Ocean.

The issue of whether the Southern Ocean is officially recognised still remains controversial, as is the issue of where the boundaries of the Southern Ocean lie. Suffice to say, Australian authorities recognise the Southern Ocean as touching Australia's southern coastline.

Australia is an island continent. That means it is a continent completely surrounded by water, but its size and the fact that it sits on its own tectonic plate are reasons why it is a continent, not an island.

Seas and oceans which surroun Australia include the following:

  • West of Australia is the Indian ocean and to the east is the Pacific Ocean.
  • South of Tasmania and Australia's southern coastline is the Southern Ocean.
  • North of Australia are the Timor and Arafura seas
  • To the southeast, between Australia and New Zealand, is the Tasman Sea
  • To the northeast is the Coral Sea.
