Apple recently changed the official name for the Macintosh operating system's name from "Mac OS X" to just "OS X."
If the machine was not purchased "brand new" there can be many operating systems running the Apple Macintosh including Microsoft's Windows series of OS's as well as flavors of Linux.

∙ 11y agoThe current Operating System on Apple computers is called OS X (was known as Mac OS X), as of today, 11/3/2012, it is version 10.8.2. Apple's computers are called Macintoshes, a name that is from the edible apple called macintosh. Apple Macintoshes use OS X version 10.8.2.
Though not usually considered a computer but can technically can be considered computers are the non-Macintosh products that Apple currently makes, such as the iPhone, iPod and it's various models and iPad and it's various models. The Operating System of the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad has the name of iOS and the current version today, 11/3/2012 is version 6.0.1. Apple "i" products use iOS version 6.0.1.
