The spinal cord is contained within the vertebral column (backbone). Ribs attach to the vertebral column, so in that sense, you could say the contents of the thoracic cavity (lungs and heart) are also protected by the vertebrae, as ribs arise from the vertebrae.

But only the spinal cord lies within the backbone itself. It does not directly protect any organs.
