Although multicellular organisms begin as single cells, they

grow into larger organisms through cell division. However, cell

division alone does not allow organisms to develop. If cell

division were the only process occurring in cells, all multicellular

organisms would end up as spheres of identical cells. But during

development, cells become specialized to perform particular functions.

Organisms that are most specialized are:

  • multi-cellular
  • cells organized into tissues
  • tissues organized into organs
  • organs organized into organ systems
  • organ systems are specialized but function together on behalf of the organism
  • the organism can take in nutrients and the cells convert food to energy
  • can adapt to changes in environment over time; the organism evolves
  • the organism can, to some extent, influence the environment, e.g. humans

Plants and animals (Eukaryotes) have cell specialization because they are multicellular organisms and bacteria (Prokaryotes) dont have cell specialization because bacteria only has one cell and that one cell does every job.

many-celled organisms :)

What are specialized cells and what type of organism are they found?

specialized cells are cells that exist for a specific function for example skin cells or brain cells or liver cells. all multicellular organisms have specialized cells. unicellular organisms do not because they have to carry out all the functions of an entire organism while a skin cell does not have to "worry" about cleaning toxins from the body for example.
