The league of nations failed to prevent it, but so did a lot of other people and nations.

The League of Nations.
The WTO (World Trade Organization)
The World Trade Organization was formed in order to promote free trade.
The League of Nations was formed after WW1 (1919) to settle international disputes peacefully, to help prevent future wars and maintain lasting peace.
7th April 1948
It was hoped that the United Nations could succeed where the League of Nations (formed after WWI) had failed. The UN has not been perfect in preventing wars, but, there has been no WWIII since 1945.
■Because without WW2 the UN would have never been formed. After WW1 they tried something similar (The League of Nations) but the United States didn't take part and it failed miserably. The UN was formed to stop wars and WW2 gave the world a vivid reason as to why such an organization should be formed.
