Asbestos generally affects the lungs. It is made up of tiny, sharp fragments of silicate-based rock. If these are inhaled, they can cause serious damage to the fragile lining of the lungs. The can lead to cancer of the lungs or any number of other respiratory diseases.

However, the fibers have also been linked to laryngeal and ovarian cancers and can affect the lining of the heart as well.
