SULTAN BAYEZID II was famous for accepting an extremely large number of Jewish and Muslim refugees who had been exiled from Spain in the 1492 and 1530. However, numerous Ottoman Sultans took in European refugees, especially Slavic and Turkic Muslims who were pushed out of the Balkans in the 1700s and 1800s with the numerous Balkans Independence Movements.
Sultan Bayezid II of the Ottoman Empire embraced European refugees, particularly during the late 15th century. After the fall of Granada in 1492, he welcomed Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition, offering them a safe haven in his realm. This not only bolstered the empire's population and economy but also showcased his policy of religious tolerance and inclusion. Bayezid’s actions contributed to the Ottomans' reputation as a refuge for those escaping persecution.
