US Grant was a quiet and industrious boy who was very good with horses. As a young teenager he was an accomplished trick rider, a skill which led him to become one of the best horsemen in the United States Army. Indeed many historians have wondered why Grant was put in the Infantry by the Army when his skills showed that he could have been an outstanding cavalry man.

Yes, although he was General-in-Chief, he occupied a mobile headquarters travelling with the Army of the Potomac, commanded by General Meade. Some say that Meade should have taken the surrender, as it was his army that had beaten Lee. But as Lee had been promoted General-in-Chief of the Confederates, it was reasonable that his opposite number, US Grant, should do the honours.
Many junior US engineers have been overlooked in the course of the US Civil War. One outstanding junior engineer, George L. Gillespie was an outstanding engineer. He graduated second in the West Point class of 1862 and was assigned to the Army of the Potomac three months after his graduation. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in carrying a vital dispatch from General Sheridan to General Meade during the Battle of Cold Harbor. He was captured, but managed to escape. He was nearly captured again, and struggled to reach General Meade's headquarters with vital information. As an aside, Gillespie designed the standard version of the Medal of Honor in use since ever since 1904.
