However, most consider the 1892 Colombian Exposition Half Dollar the first actual commemorative coin. It was authorized by an Act of Congress on August 5, 1892 at which time 5 million of the coins were authorized to be minted to be sold at the exposition. However, the exposition was not a great sucess and many of the coins were melted.
