As a result they had much greater success with a much smaller loss of men than the macho Americans.

Obviously, academic papers should be informative. I'm not sure that it is very helpful to describe them as messages. A typical paper will say something about relevant research, outline the issue to be dealt with and then describe the materials used, experiments done and so on - and finally present a conclusion. There are definite conventions to be followed (unlike in a message).
The answer depends on how many cards are dealt out to you - which depends on how many cards you are dealt.
